Inspired by the planetarium at Thinktank, this banana space food is great for any wannabe astronaut.
As space missions began to last longer than just a quick trip out of the atmosphere it meant that food was needed which was lightweight and could last a long time.
From the early Mercury and Apollo missions, NASA worked on freeze-drying their foods. Freeze-drying is like suspended animation, it keeps the fruit and other foods totally intact, but removes up to 98% of the water. As you eat the food, your mouth rehydrates it, restoring it to its original state. Freeze drying allows the food to last for years without losing its flavour and it’s much lighter.
